So I flew from Bali to Borneo. Kalimantan. Landed in Pontianak, right on the equator. The flight there was hilarious, as we were very delayed in their crappy little airport. There was a guy there who I became friends with, and he ended up being a very interesting cat. He’s a local photo-journalist, and there are not many of those. His name is Joseph, and he and I hung out and made jokes until the plane finally got there. Spent overnight in Pontianak befriending Rani, an army major, some Chinese palm oil and mining magnate, and the Manager of the top hotel in Pontianak. Heading into Gunung Palung tomorrow. Rani is really an amazing guy, and I think we will stay friends. He’s pretty amazing, one serious Indo mo fo. Got quite the presence, totally not corrupt, has 400 people under his direct command, came to the airport at 6:30 am to look after me after our big late nite before. Between him and his bro, the dada-esque photo journalist, I really love these guys. Don’t know about Mr. Chinese mining dude, really brilliant businessman. Also on the scene in Pontianak was the Lonely Planet hero who runs sustainability tourism for some of the Kalimantan national parks. I have no idea how we all came together last night (last night?!) but we did.
