I really loved the town of Mandalay, for reasons that are hard to say. It is big and dirty and spread out, but it is warm and welcoming and real. Mandalay is located kind of in the middle of the country, somewhat near Pagan and Inle Lake, which are great places to go, but Mandalay has its own energy and cadence. It is the biggest trading city in Myanmar, surpassing Yangon now and having a great many dealings with China. I rented a scooter and drove all around, and felt very comfortable the whole time, even negotiating Burmese traffic! In the guest house I stayed there was a girl who worked there, Nana, who had a beautiful voice and was singing songs the whole time. I asked her to sing a song for me, which she did. Here it is.
